Now the nights are drawing in the the summer seems an age ago we sometimes need a bit of a nudge to venture out…well I know I do anyway! It’s always nice to do something a little different and a great opportunity to meet new people. So with this in mind when I saw an advertisement for some floristry workshops on the Helensburgh Flowers Facebook Page, I thought why not!
As a photographer and a creative I like to keep up to date with colour trends and I’m always looking for ways to bring something a little special to my sessions in the studio.
Whether that’s through the use of a beautiful handmade garment, seasonal flowers and foliage, or a quirky prop. Of course your baby or child should always be the primary focus of the photograph, but it’s nice to add something complimentary to give your images a little extra something and create a true piece of art that you can hang proudly in your home. It’s important that your wall art compliments your home, your decor and your personality, so that each time you walk past that gorgeous portrait of your little one your heart does a little dance.
Anyway….I digress…back to the workshop.
I knew we were onto a winner when I discovered it was being held in the pretty barn at Fruin Farm.
For any of you who haven’t tried out this little gem, where have you been??? In between Helensburgh and Loch Lomond it’s a little slice of loveliness. Fruin Farm is an old farm cottage converted into a small restaurant serving the most delicious food, there’s also a very pretty barn with the rafters adorned with fairy lights, a perfect space for a small wedding or family get together. And you can’t visit without saying hello to the resident alpacas & llamas.
When I arrived I was welcomed by Denise and Fiona from Helensburgh Flowers as well as the lovely girls from No 5 The House, there was wine on offer, but alas I was driving so had to decline!
The barn looked beautiful full of flowers in beautiful deep reds, pinks and plums. Each of us had our assigned space with a bucket bursting with flowers and foliage, a stone effect pot complete with a good chunk of oasis soaked in flower food, a pair of scissors and a rather fetching denim apron.
We were also treated to a Farrow and Ball goodie bag...everything coordinated beautifully.
The evening began with a presentation from Jane from Farrow and Ball, it was really interesting learning a little about the paints, not only the colour palettes and seeing how the colours fit so beautifully together but also about the formulation of the paint and what makes it unique to Farrow and Ball.
We then went through to the restaurant where we were treated to some delicious homemade soup and bread followed by a piece (or 2!!) of freshly baked shortbread.
After the lovely food and time to chat we headed back into the barn ready for Denise's demonstration.
It's clear that Denise, the owner of Helensburgh Flowers, really loves what she does...and she's rather good at it too!
She guided us all step by step so that we could create our own arrangements.
Everyone got busy creating, Denise and Fiona were both on hand to offer encouragement and extra stems if our design called for something more.
At the end of the evening we all took home a beautiful arrangement that was individual to us.
Colour, flowers, good food and good company...what more can you ask for?
